Edit Your Score 2: Changing Rhythm Patterns

Change the Rhythm of One Measure

A score generated by B.Click is ready to use as-is, but even a small rhythm change can make the same chord progression feel very different.

On the performance screen, tap a measure number and choose Edit. This opens the measure editor, where you can adjust the notes, rests, ties, and chord assignments inside that measure.

Done and Back

When you finish editing, tap Done in the top-right corner. Done saves your changes and returns to the performance screen.

The Back button in the top-left corner returns without saving the changes. Use it when you tried a rhythm idea but decide not to keep it.

Choose Note Lengths with Division

The first step is deciding how finely each beat should be divided. In Division (♪), you can choose note values such as whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, and sixteenth notes.

A quarter note gives you one note per beat. An eighth note gives you two notes per beat. A sixteenth note gives you four notes per beat. A good starting point is to set every beat to quarter notes, then add eighth notes to just one or two beats.

Whole notes and half notes are available only when enough beats remain in the measure. For example, a whole note lasts four beats, so it cannot be used in a 2/4 or 3/4 measure.

Choose Notes, Rests, and Ties

In Pattern, each position can be set to ● (note), ○ (rest), ⌒● (tied starting note), or ⌒ (tie).

A rest creates a place where you do not play. Leaving space can make the rhythm feel more expressive than playing continuously. Even a simple pattern like “play three beats, rest one beat” can change the feel of the music.

A tie extends the previous sound into the next position. Use it when you want the note to continue instead of being played again. It may feel a little tricky at first, but ties are useful when you want a rhythm to breathe and flow.

Assign Chords to Notes

You can assign chords to notes from the Chords to use area.

Chords can be assigned to positions that actually sound, such as ● or ⌒●. A rest cannot have a chord, because it is a place where you do not play.

Check the Preview

After changing the rhythm, check the Measure Preview at the bottom of the screen. Tap Update to display your current settings as notation.

Instead of starting with a complicated pattern, begin with quarter notes, then add eighth notes, rests, and ties little by little. The same chord progression can become much more fun to play once the rhythm starts to move.
